For the second year running, the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) will host a strong contingent of documentary films from Chile – including a world premiere, two Forum projects and five movies in the video library.
The premiere screens as one of 21 unique films in the Luminous line-up – a selection which the organizers say demonstrate a highly intimate engagement with our humanity, featuring people who resiliently strive to overcome adversity.
The film, Travesti Odyssey, is directed by Nicolás Videla and produced with Nicole Bonilla. It captures the last performance of the Cabaret Travesía Travesti, which turned out to be timed to coincide with an explosion of civil unrest in the country, as Chileans took to the streets to protest government price hikes.
The actors in the show – which deals with politics, power and a historical legacy that marginalizes the trans community – find themselves divided as to whether the show should go on.
La Casa, meanwhile, screens as one of two projects in the Forum collection. Directed by the renowned duo Bettina Perut and Ivan Osnovikoff, and produced by Maite Alberdi (The Mole Agent), Dirk Manthey and Alexandra Galvis, the film contrasts a domestic social revolt against a global pandemic that forces people into confinement, against a microcosm of what’s happening within the four walls of a single home.
Alis, meanwhile, is directed by Colombian directors Nicolas van Hemelryck and Clayre Weiskopf, and produced by Lise Lense, Alexandra Galvis and Radu Stancu. (The work is being developed as a coproduction between Colombia, Chile and Romania.) The film concentrates on the lives of teenage girls living on the streets of Bogota who dream of a life they will likely never know. Their narrative reveals an amazing perseverance and a desire to break the cycle of violence and embrace the future.
The 12-person Chilean delegation will also bring five films to screen as part of Docs for Sale, the festival’s video library.
