DocMontevideo is one of the main events of the Latin American documentary. Each year, hundreds of professionals gather at the event to be part of the market and industry’s diverse instances; including training events, such as seminars and laboratories; and spaces open to the general public, such as the exhibitions during Documentary Week.
“Chile’s presence at DocMontevideo is an important milestone for the country. It will undoubtedly help make the Chilean industry known and allow filmmakers to share their experience, network, and explore co-production possibilities in Uruguay. Plus, it is also essential to approach Chile and its audiovisual and documentary export talent closer to the world,” expressed Ana Laura Vidal, ProChile’s commercial representative in Montevideo.
This year at least a dozen projects are part of the market’s official selection, which will be held entirely online. Chilean productions stand out in all market sections: documentary and series pitching; co-production markets, and meetings – instances where the filmmakers can network with decision makers and international sales agents.
“We are happy that Chile continues attending this important Latin American market in such a robust way with projects that continue to demonstrate the thematic and narrative diversity of Chilean documentaries. Also, DocMontevideo has been a historical partner of the Chilean documentary, becoming a space where Chilean productions find finance and distribution possibilities,” comments Paula Ossandón, Director of Chiledoc.
Two projects participate in the series’ pitching. A Mutual Land, directed by Carlos Sepúlveda and produced by Macarena Monros, portrays different areas of socio-environmental recovery in Chile, emphasizing the resilience of the communities and their endemic flora and fauna. And The Reinvented, a series in development directed by Josefina Cabezón and produced by Marcela Morilla, tells the story of immigrant families who arrived in Chile between the Industrial Revolution and the Second World War and who started a particular line of business that is maintained up to this day by their descendants. On the other hand, a feature film will be present in the Documentary Pitching section. The project Chaos Eclipse, directed by Dubi Cano and Samantha Cabrera and produced by Mariajosé Zuazo, is set during the arrival of an eclipse that opens a portal to the childhood of five cousins in the cold Chilean countryside.
Six projects participate in the meeting instances of this significant event. Edita, directed by Pamela Pollak and produced by Cristóbal Sotomayor and Carola Ojalvo; The Snowy Winter in the South, directed by Sebastián Vidal and produced by Sebastián Lavados; Red Soil, directed by Klaudia Kemper and produced by Daniela Olivares; The Musical Score, directed by Francisca Silva and produced by Daniela Bravo; Bagatelles, directed by Ferrán Vergara and produced next to Bastián González; also, The Vanished, directed by Omar Orlando Zeballos and Sophie Chevalier-Z and produced by Maria Jose Díaz, Jurgen Buedts and Corinne Delpech, this last project awarded by MiradasDoc.
In addition, two feature films in development participate in the co-production market. A Street Named Cuba, a co-production directed by Vanessa Batista (Cuba) and Guillermo Barberá (Spain) and produced by Claudia Olivera Peña (Chile); and the project October’s Mother, directed by Cristián Lagos and produced by Aukaleb Ankaro, Maximiliano Bolados and Ivo Malinarich.
Also taking part in the meeting will be the production companies La Ventana Cine, Alias Film, Las Minas SmartMedia, Sietemagias Films and DiezCincuenta.
As featured tutors and speakers during the event will be the directors and producers of the awarded documentary Alis, Clare Weiskopf y Nicolas van Hemelryck, winners of the Youth Jury awarded by the young jury at Sheffield Doc/Fest and Best Iberoamerican Documentary Feature in FIC Guadalajara; as well Marcela Santibáñez, renowned Chilean producer in charge of the Oscar-nominated documentary The Mole Agent, and Industry Director of the Santiago International Documentary Film Festival FIDOCS.
The participation in the DocMontevideo market in Uruguay is financed by Prochile and organized by Chiledoc, the Chilean documentary sector brand.
