«Now more than ever, maternity under confinement becomes important to observe and dignify» says Tana Gilbert, director of the documentary Malqueridas, chosen to present herself before experts in one of the most popular sections of Visions du Réel. The pitch will be held on Friday 16 April, virtually.
Malqueridas portrays a group of women prisoners who from prison reconstruct their experiences of motherhood through videos and photographs recorded with forbidden cellphones. It is a project that invites to reflect on motherhood under confinement and how cinematographic representation is able to find a way to express that world.
To date, the film has been selected in Chilean events such as Conecta 2019, Sanfic Lab 2019, Cine Chileno del Futuro at FICValdivia 2019 and Doc Valparaíso 2020, as well as IDFA Academy 2019. In addition, it has received the support of Corfo and was awarded for its participation in the Script Workshop of the Center for Cinematographic Creation (CCC), at FicValdivia 2019.
Malqueridas, a film produced by filmmaker Paola Castillo, is one of the 29 works invited to participate in the selection of the industry projects of Visions du Réel, a market with which Chiledoc has a long-standing relationship. «It is a festival that has selected Chilean projects and films every year, and whose focus, which puts more emphasis on film language, has allowed many Chilean films to opt for premieres at this prestigious event» says Flor Rubina, director of the sector brand and part of the delegation that will bring this and five other audiovisual works to the Swiss market.
Other projects to participate at VdR
Breaking the brick, directed and produced by Carola Fuentes and Rafael Valdeavellano, tells of a jaded multitude who rises throughout Chile demanding economic and social transformations. Its directors, who had already worked together on the documentary Chicago Boys in 2015, look to show the awakening of the people, and the death of a model that can no longer cope within society. Under the same topic appears Oasis, documentary directed by Tamara Uribe, part of the MAFI collective, with the production of Alba Gavriaghi and Diego Pino Anguita, the film that portrays the Chilean people facing the elite in the most important constituent process of its history.
Orlando Torres, founding partner of Astromelia Films, presents himself as the director and producer of the film Cagliostro: the Film Poet, which kicks off the moment when the Chilean poet Vicente Huidobro earned $10,000 to adapt his silent film script: Cagliostro. With a creative impulse, Torres revives the script of a never-made film.
In the shade of light, directed by Isabel Reyes and produced by Ignacia Merino, gives an account of a small rural village where, between forests and countryside, electricity vibrates in over more than a hundred high-voltage towers that have trapped this village in an apocalyptic scenario.
Cristóbal Valenzuela, director of Stealing Rodin, arrives this time with Alien Island, where he recounts the experiences of Ernesto, a man who abandons his work and settles in a forest on the island of Chiloé. In that place, he begins to communicate by radio with characters who claim to live on «Friendship Island» associated with an alien race. Valenzuela tells a story where lies and truth intersect, creating an island myth that has not stopped growing.
Another important section of the event is VdR Film Market, a video library in which this year will participate more than 400 new documentaries that are already available for screenings, by buying tickets or an unlimited pass on the festival website. The online platform will feature the nationally produced films Laura (Francisco Bustamante, Titi Viera-Gallo), Border (Paola Castillo), The roots weaver (Fernando Saldivia), Onkel Günter (Juan Francisco Riumalló, Soledad Millar) and Messages for Sydney (Andrei Eichin, Felipe Garrido).
