• Six markets will be on the 2022 focus of the sectorial brand dedicated to promoting Chilean documentaries worldwide. Among the novelties is the participation, for the first time, in Getting Real in the United States.
• With a positive balance, a year of high participation in international markets closes, and in the same period, the launch of the brand’s website also stands out.
Paula Ossandon, director of Chiledoc, with Diego Pino, executive director of Chiledoc.
During 2011, Chiledocs’ efforts focused on promoting the country’s image and positioning Chilean documentaries internationally, especially in markets defined as priorities. Along with different delegations consisting of brand representatives and industry professionals, Chile stood out at major festivals and markets such as Sunny Side of the Doc and Marché du Film, in France; Bogota Audiovisual Market BAM, in Colombia; CNEX Chinese Doc Forum CCDF, in China; and FICG Industry, in Mexico.
«The pandemic meant that many markets were held online, which did not impede organizing activities such as meetings with delegations and work meetings. In the cases of Marché du Film and FICG Industry, we had face-to-face participation, which helped with contacts and networks», says Paula Ossandon, Chiledocs’ Director.
«This year, we focused on communications,» continues the director. «We look for partnerships and promotion on international media such as Variety, Real Screen, Modern Times Review, Business Doc Europe, and LatAm Cinema, and through a new website. The goal was positioning Chilean directors and their films or series, since this was a year of significant selections in renowned festivals and markets,» she remarks.
Projections for a new period.
2022 is a year of challenges in which Chiledoc will strengthen ties in countries and markets already focused on, and new territories such as the United States through the Getting Real Conference, organized by the International Documentary Association IDA. Additionally, Chiledoc will continue working on positioning and internationalizing the sector, the enlargement of contacts and networks, and promoting co-productions.
«The countries focused by Chiledoc are France, United States, China, Colombia, and Mexico,» says Paula Ossandon. «The United States, where we are going for the first time, and China, where we hope will be an entrance door to the Asian markets, represents a big challenge. In the case of France, this is one of the countries where we have most commercial exchanges considering funds, festivals, acquisitions, work alliances, and prospects. Colombia is highly relevant in the field of exchanges with Latin America, and Mexico is a window not only to the region but also to the United States and Canada,» she adds.
Such as CNEX Chinese Doc Forum CCDF in China and Getting Real in the United States will create new relations through the participation in activities and meetings with distributors, tv channels and platforms, sales agents, and producers from these countries.
In France, Marche du Film, the largest market globally linked to the Cannes festival, stands out for its relevance and the participation of decision-makers from all over the world. In 2021, Chiledoc organized for the second time at Cannes Docs, its documentary section, an event called Docs in Progress Showcase Chile, where four national projects in the editing stage were presented to significant industry agents, where one of the projects even won a prize. Sunny Side of the Doc is also taking place in France, a market that stands out for its focus on television-oriented documentary content. Hence its relevancy for the Chilean sector.
On the other hand, Bogota Audiovisual Market BAM in Colombia stands out for the connections offered with the Latin American market and the possibility of promoting co-productions. Last year, a meeting was held between Chilean, Colombian, and Mexican producers to promote this type of collaboration. Another destination in Latin America is the FICG Industry of the Guadalajara International Film Festival in Mexico. Due to its size, it is of great value and a bridge between Latin America, the United States, and Canada.
