Internationalization of Chilean Documentary Films: Results and Challenges

Chiledoc presented the results of an online survey conducted among Chilean audiovisual companies to gather data on the internationalization and commercialization of national documentaries between 2022 and 2023.

Key findings included the four countries with which Chile co-produces the most: France, Colombia, Germany, and Argentina. Additionally, the research revealed that co-productions generate the highest revenues, accounting for 76.2% of the total. The survey also highlighted an increase in the fees paid by festivals, reflecting a greater interest in Chilean productions. A notable example is The Eternal Memory by Maite Alberdi, which was nominated for an Oscar and won a Goya.

«Chilean documentaries have significant international reach. There are many reasons for this, such as the quality of their narrative and artistic proposals. While the quality of Chilean documentaries has always been outstanding, today there is a new generation refreshing the scene and proposing new ideas. It is a cinema that takes risks, broadens its language, and explores new ways of storytelling,» points out Paula Ossandón, Chiledoc’s Director.
