Chilean Documentaries at Hot Docs 2024
As part of Hot Docs 2024, the Chilean documentary sector shines again this year, presenting three films with phenomenal thematic diversity. These films feature unique characters living in impossible professions, residing in geographically adverse yet astonishing places, or characters whose lives have been crossed by the experience of migration and rupture. The Fabulous Gold Harvesting Machine, directed by Alfredo Pourailly and produced by Francisco Hervé, will have its world premiere in the International Competition. Synchrony, directed by Carol Bloj and produced by Claudia León, will also have its world premiere, while the short film La Diosa Quebrada, directed and produced by The Broken Goddess, will have its North American Premiere. These films will be screened as part of the 31st version of North America’s largest festival and market for documentaries from April 25 to May 5, 2024.
In addition, seven documentary projects will be part of the Chilean catalog, along with a delegation composed of seven producers who will participate in Hot Docs’ documentary market, thanks to the support of the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage (MINCAP).
For the Minister of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage, Carolina Arredondo, «Chile enjoys a renowned international prestige in the field of documentary filmmaking, and once again, its presence at the most prestigious documentary festival in North America is evidence of this. To achieve these accomplishments, the commitment of institutions such as Chiledoc and the Ministry of Culture is essential, and we value and appreciate the work of those who once again allow Chilean cinema to have this important global showcase.»
On her part, Paola Castillo, Deputy Director of Chiledoc, the brand that promotes Chilean documentaries worldwide, points out: «The number of premieres we will have this year at Hot Docs shows how well-positioned our documentaries are in the world. These films showcase in a great way the diversity, high artistic quality, and depth of content of our cinema. Additionally, a delegation of producers will attend to seek alliances to boost their projects. This is a great moment for Chilean documentary, and we hope new opportunities will arise there.»

Throughout two decades of filming, the film unveils the facets of the fracture of the iconic statue of the Goddess amid a Caracas marked by a sharp political and social division. Different eras come together to explore a rupture that is not just that of a statue. It is the history of Venezuela and of every Venezuelan who feels torn by a war that never belonged to them. It is also the wound of those who live in the void of an immigrant’s life. Co-production between Chile and Venezuela.
